Fortune Sacco forward Collins Maina Mwangi has emerged as the standout scorer in the National Super League, with the 23-year-old now leading the Golden Boot race as the season nears its end.

Mwangi has netted 21 goals in 33 appearances, placing him ahead of Migori Youth’s Syphas Otieno, Equity Bank FC’s Athumani Rashid, and MOFA’s Vincent Nyabuto in a tightly contested scoring chart.

His latest contribution came on Sunday, when he scored the decisive goal in Fortune Sacco’s 1-0 win over Migori Youth, a result that underlined his importance to the team even as their promotion hopes fade.

For Mwangi, however, personal accolades remain secondary. “At the moment, I’m undecided about my future,” he said. “My focus is to help the team finish well and win the Golden Boot.”

Behind the numbers is a player still shaping his next step. Mwangi says his long-term ambition is to rise beyond the NSL and test himself at a higher level.

“If I make any decision, it will be in my best interest and future,” he said. “My target is to feature in the SportPesa League and play professional football abroad.”

His coach, Vincent Nyaberi, has been quick to praise his consistency, noting that Mwangi has maintained his scoring form despite interruptions caused by injury earlier in the campaign.

“He is in top form,” Nyaberi said. “If he stays fit in the remaining five games, he will win the Golden Boot. He missed a couple of matches due to injury but has still performed well.” Nyaberi also confirmed the club’s desire to keep hold of their leading forward. “We want to keep him. He is a top marksman,” he said.

While Mwangi’s goals have kept Fortune Sacco competitive, their push for promotion appears increasingly unlikely. The club sits sixth on 57 points, 11 behind leaders 3K FC, with only five matches remaining. Nyaberi conceded the gap may be too large to close. “With an 11-point gap, I don’t think we have a chance,” he said.

Attention now shifts to Friday’s fixture against FC Talanta at Dandora Stadium, where Fortune Sacco will aim to finish the season on a positive note.

“Talanta are in good form,” Nyaberi said. “But we are going there to win.”
