Kisumu is preparing for a politically charged showdown on April 26 as the Linda Mwananchi faction within the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) plans rally in the party’s traditional stronghold.
The rally is expected to expose deepening divisions within ODM, particularly over its perceived cooperation with President William Ruto’s administration.
The faction organizing the rally is backed by prominent figures including Embakasi East MP Babu Owino, Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna, and Siaya Governor James Orengo who are positioning themselves as defenders of wananchi interests, particularly on the rising cost of living and increased taxation.
Rift Within ODM Deepens
The planned rally underscores a growing rift within ODM, with one faction opposing the party’s engagement in a broad-based political arrangement perceived to be aligned with the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA).
Critics within the party argue that the cooperation undermines ODM’s opposition credentials and weakens its bargaining power ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The Linda Mwananchi faction has framed the Kisumu rally as a platform to “reclaim the party’s voice” and reconnect with grassroots supporters.
However, the rally has faced resistance from some of the local leaders in the Nyanza region.
Alego Usonga MP Samuel Atandi is among those who have publicly rejected the planned gathering, terming it unnecessary and potentially disruptive.
The opposition from regional leaders highlights internal tensions not just at the national level but also within ODM’s grassroots structures, raising concerns about unity in one of its strongest support bases.
Rising Tensions and Security Concerns
Tensions have escalated in the lead-up to the rally, with both sides trading accusations of political intimidation.
Claims of planned disruptions, deployment of “goons,” and politically motivated arrests have intensified the already volatile atmosphere.
The situation worsened following an alleged attack on Vihiga Senator Godfrey Osotsi, who is associated with the Linda Mwananchi faction. The incident has further fueled mistrust and heightened fears of violence.
Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja has assured the public that adequate security measures will be in place to ensure the rally proceeds peacefully. Authorities say they are closely monitoring the situation to prevent any escalation.
Kisumu has long been considered an ODM stronghold, making the unfolding events a critical test of the party’s internal cohesion.
The outcome of the rally could have far-reaching implications for ODM’s political strategy and unity as the country edges closer to the 2027 elections.
