For Nico O’Reilly, the celebrations began on Saturday. By Sunday evening, they had turned into something far more memorable.
The 21-year-old defender scored twice at Wembley to lead Manchester City to a 2-0 win over Arsenal in the League Cup final, delivering a performance that felt both unlikely and assured.
It was a match decided in a matter of minutes. Just after the hour mark, O’Reilly reacted quickest when Arsenal goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga faltered under pressure. The ball dropped kindly, and the young defender nodded it in from close range.
Four minutes later, he did it again. Another header. Another moment of hesitation in Arsenal’s defence. The contest was, in effect, over.
“Unbelievable feeling,” O’Reilly said afterwards. “To win the final and beat a team like that, we know how good they are. It gives us momentum.”
“A bit of disbelief, seeing all the fans like that when I scored. It’s been a great birthday weekend.”
For Manchester City, it marked their ninth League Cup title. For O’Reilly, it was a coming-of-age performance on one of English football’s biggest stages.
There was little in his recent past to suggest such a decisive role in a final. O’Reilly began his career as a midfielder before being reshaped into a left-back under Pep Guardiola, a shift that has slowly broadened his game.
“Since I was a kid, I always played in midfield,” he said. “I was used to getting into the box and scoring goals. To bring that into the senior leveL, it adds something to my game.”
Arsenal, for their part, will look back on missed moments and costly errors. Kepa’s misjudgement proved decisive, though the team as a whole struggled to recover after falling behind.
There was no immediate comment from the Arsenal camp, but the defeat will sting. Finals often turn on fine margins. On this occasion, those margins belonged to City.
High in the stands, O’Reilly’s family watched it unfold. He knew they were there, he said, and could sense their reaction.
“My whole family came down,” he said. “They’ll be buzzing. I can’t wait to celebrate with them.”
