Embakasi East Member of Parliament Babu Owino has dismissed claims of a power struggle between himself and Edwin Sifuna, saying their political roles complement rather than compete with each other.
Speaking amid growing speculation over who holds greater influence within the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) ranks in Nairobi, the Embakasi East lawmaker used a metaphor to describe their working relationship.
“It is a conversation. Mr. Sun is the king of the day and shines during the day. Mr. Moon is the king of the night and shines at night. There is no competition in this thing; there is only completion,” Babu said.
He added that just as the sun and moon both play critical roles in completing a full day, he and Sifuna are united by a shared political vision.
“The sun does not affect the moon shining and the moon does not affect the sun shining. You need the moon and the sun to make a complete day. Therefore, it is not about competition, it is about completion of the job that we want to do, completion of our vision,” he stated.
United Front Against Broad-Based Government
Both leaders are currently at the forefront of an ODM faction that has taken a firm stance against the broad-based government backed by President William Ruto.
The faction has been vocal in its criticism of the political arrangement, arguing that it dilutes the opposition’s oversight role.
Their position has sparked internal debate within ODM, particularly following the support extended to the broad-based framework by party leader Oburu Odinga and his faction.
Babu and Sifuna have consistently framed their resistance as a defense of democratic accountability and the party’s foundational principles.
As ODM navigates internal debates and national political realignments, the message from the Embakasi East MP is clear: the focus remains on completing their political mission rather than competing for dominance.
