Strike Grounds Travel Plans as Kenya Airways Warns of Major JKIA Disruptions

Passengers travelling through Nairobi’s main airport faced uncertainty on Monday after Kenya Airways warned of widespread flight disruptions, as aviation workers staged industrial action over pay and working conditions.

The national carrier said the strike had affected several departures and arrivals at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, East Africa’s busiest aviation hub. Travellers were urged to confirm their flight status and prepare for delays or rescheduling.

“We sincerely regret the inconvenience and are working closely with aviation authorities and airport stakeholders to minimise disruption and maintain safe operations,” the airline said in a statement.

Kenya Airways travel advisory issued on Monday 16/02/2026.

The disruption follows a strike threat by the Kenya Aviation Workers Union, which represents a broad range of airport staff. Union officials say frustration has been building for years. They cite delayed salary reviews, concerns over job security, and demands that contract workers be placed on permanent and pensionable terms.

At the centre of the dispute is the implementation of collective bargaining agreements, which the union argues have not been fully honoured. Workers who have served for more than a decade, union leaders say, are still waiting for meaningful changes to their pay and conditions.

Aviation regulators moved quickly to reassure the public. The Kenya Civil Aviation Authority said it had activated contingency plans to ensure safety and continuity of critical services, including air navigation.

“The Authority continues to engage relevant stakeholders in line with labour laws and court directions,” it said, adding that it remains open to dialogue.

Even so, the strike has exposed the fragility of Kenya’s aviation sector, which is still recovering from the economic shock of the pandemic and rising operational costs. Kenya Airways, once regarded as one of Africa’s strongest carriers, has faced financial strain in recent years, prompting restructuring and renewed efforts to stabilise its operations.

For passengers, the immediate concern is more practical. Many arrived at the airport unsure whether their flights would depart on time. Airline officials advised travellers to monitor official communication channels and consider rebooking where necessary.

Behind the delays lies a familiar tension. Workers are demanding fair compensation and security. Airlines and regulators are trying to keep planes in the air. And travellers, caught in between, are left waiting for clarity.
