A clinical officer at a public health facility in Kenya’s Bomet County has been arrested after being accused of raping a pregnant woman during a routine maternity check-up, police said on Monday.
The incident is alleged to have occurred at Chemaner Health Centre, a government-run facility serving the wider Bomet East area. According to the police, the suspect was on duty and attending to the woman when the alleged assault took place.
Michael Singa, the Bomet East sub-county police commander, said the clinical officer, identified as Eric Langat, also known as Kirinyet, was arrested following a report made by staff at the facility.
“The victim screamed for help,” Mr Singa said. “Her cries drew the attention of other health workers and patients, who rushed to the room.”
Police said those who responded found the officer in what they described as a compromising situation. The suspect is alleged to have fled the scene as people gathered.
A report was later filed at Chemaner Police Station, prompting officers to launch a search. Mr Singa said the suspect was later tracked down and arrested at a hideout within the area.
The woman was taken to Longisa County Referral Hospital, where she underwent a medical examination and received counselling, police said.
Investigators are still gathering evidence, and the suspect has not yet entered a plea. Police said he will be arraigned in court once inquiries are complete.
Authorities declined to comment on claims circulating locally that the suspect may have been linked to earlier, unreported incidents, saying any such allegations would be examined as part of the ongoing investigation.
The case has renewed concern about patient safety in public health facilities and the vulnerability of women seeking routine medical care. Local officials said they were cooperating fully with investigators as the matter proceeds through the justice system.
