The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) Party Leader Oburu Odinga has issued a firm statement following recent public comments made by Secretary General Senator Edwin Sifuna during a TV interview aired on Tuesday, February 3, 2026.
In the statement addressed to party members, supporters, and the general public, the Party Leader acknowledged the interview and the intense public debate that followed, while underscoring his constitutional responsibility to oversee the party’s leadership and long-term sustainability.
While reaffirming ODM’s identity as a democratic movement that encourages debate and internal discourse, the Party Leader raised concerns over what he termed a growing tendency by the Secretary General to blur the line between personal opinion and official party policy.
According to the statement, such distinctions are critical, as ODM policy is not determined by individual preferences but through structured deliberations within constitutionally mandated party organs.
The failure to maintain this clarity, the Party Leader noted, has led to confusion among party members and supporters in recent months.
Oburu Reaffirms Ideological Foundations
Despite the concerns raised, the Party Leader acknowledged that Senator Sifuna correctly restated ODM’s core ideological principles during the interview.
These include social democracy, equity, justice, devolution, constitutionalism, and the pursuit of inclusive governance.
The statement emphasized that these values have consistently guided ODM’s political engagements, including coalition-building efforts, and will continue to shape the party’s strategy as it navigates an evolving political landscape and considers future alliances.
The Party Leader described these principles as part of the enduring political philosophy championed by ODM leader Raila Odinga, pledging to continue upholding them.
Warning Over Legitimacy of Party Organs
However, the Party Leader took issue with what he described as misleading assertions made during the interview regarding the legitimacy of certain party organs and office holders.
He reiterated that since its inception, ODM has remained faithful to its constitution and the rule of law, principles that have guided the appointment and validation of all party officials, including Senator Sifuna himself.
The statement categorically affirmed that all current ODM officials are serving legitimately and are fully supported by resolutions of the relevant party organs.
In closing, the Party Leader stressed the need for unity and adherence to established party structures as ODM continues to position itself within Kenya’s dynamic political environment.
