On a quiet Tuesday, a personal announcement from the vice president’s household cut through the usual rhythm of Washington.
Usha Vance, the second lady of the United States, is expecting her fourth child this summer, she and Vice President JD Vance said in a joint statement shared on social media.
“We’re very excited to share the news that Usha is pregnant with our fourth child, a boy,” the couple wrote. “Usha and the baby are doing well, and we are all looking forward to welcoming him in late July.”
For the Vance family, the moment is both joyful and historic. It will be the first time a sitting second lady has given birth while in office, a rare milestone in the long traditions of the White House and the vice president’s residence.
The couple already have three children: Ewan, Vivek and Mirabel, who have become familiar faces alongside their parents, appearing during domestic trips and overseas visits.
Though unprecedented for a second lady, the moment echoes earlier chapters in American history. In 1893, First Lady Frances Cleveland gave birth to her daughter Esther inside the White House, the only child born there. Jacqueline Kennedy, decades later, delivered her son Patrick in 1963; he died two days later after being born prematurely, a loss that deeply marked the nation.
In their statement, the Vances described the coming months as “exciting and hectic,” and expressed gratitude to military doctors and medical staff who have supported the family.
Usha Vance, 40, stepped away from her career as a senior public-interest lawyer when her husband assumed office as President Donald Trump’s deputy. Over the past year, she has maintained a visible presence at public events, often appearing at her husband’s side while shaping her own role within the administration.
She has since assembled a small staff, guided her children through the transition to life at the Naval Observatory, and adopted childhood literacy as her signature cause. Last year, she launched a nationwide summer reading challenge aimed at encouraging young readers.
The couple’s official duties continue. Next month, they are expected to lead the United States delegation to the opening ceremony of the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan.
