Owalo Steps Down Following 2027 Presidential Declaration

Eliud Owalo

Eliud Owalo has formally resigned from President William Ruto’s government, hours after declaring his intention to vie for the presidency in the 2027 General Election.

Owalo announced his immediate departure from the role of Deputy Chief of Staff, Delivery and Government Efficiency, stating that the position could no longer be tenable following his decision to seek the country’s top office.

In a statement shared via his X (formerly Twitter) account, Owalo said his resignation takes effect immediately, underscoring his commitment to pursuing the presidency without the constraints of serving in the executive.

“Following my declaration earlier today that I intend to run for Presidency of the Republic of Kenya in the year 2027, my position as the Deputy Chief of Staff, Delivery and Government Efficiency is no longer tenable. I have therefore resigned from the position with immediate effect,” Owalo wrote.

Owalo’s resignation marks a significant political shift, as it formally separates him from President Ruto’s administration and positions him as a contender in what is shaping up to be a highly competitive 2027 race.

Owalo Joins Crowded and Competitive 2027 Field

The 2027 presidential contest is already attracting heavyweight names across Kenya’s political spectrum. Incumbent President William Ruto is widely expected to seek a second term, setting the stage for a high-stakes race.

Other notable figures who have declared or signaled interest include former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i, Wiper Party leader Stephen Kalonzo Musyoka, and former Chief Justice David Maraga.

The growing list of contenders points to an early start to political realignments and campaigns ahead of the next general election.

Owalo’s entry adds another layer to the unfolding race, with his resignation likely to be viewed as the first major step in building an independent national campaign.
