The Kenyan government has released Sh44.245 billion in capitation for Term One of the 2026 academic year, ensuring smooth operations as schools reopen on January 5.

Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba confirmed the distribution across levels:

  • Sh3.7 billion for Free Primary Education
  • Sh14.46 billion for Free Day Junior School Education
  • Sh26.08 billion for Free Day Secondary Education

Grade 10 learners under the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) are set to report to Senior Schools starting January 12, with placement reviews open from January 6–9 for genuine requests.

The capitation funds aim to support uninterrupted learning and efficient school management. CS Ogamba emphasized the importance of prudent use of public funds, warning against illegal fees or levies, while reiterating the government’s commitment to Article 53 of the Constitution, which guarantees free and compulsory basic education.

The Ministry will monitor schools closely, ensuring accountability, access, and stability as the 2026 academic year begins.
