The eagerly awaited Mashemeji Derby, Kenya’s biggest football rivalry, has been postponed after both Nyayo Stadium and Kasarani Stadium were declared unavailable for use this weekend.
In an announcement released on Wednesday, organisers confirmed that the high-stakes clash between Gor Mahia and AFC Leopards will not take place as scheduled, with a new date set to be communicated in the coming days.
Why the Derby Has Been Postponed
The postponement comes after it emerged that neither of the two major stadiums capable of hosting the derby would be free.
Kasarani Stadium is expected to host Nairobi United’s CAF Champions League fixture against Maniema Union, while Nyayo Stadium has reportedly been booked for a State House event, rendering it unavailable for sporting activities.
With both venues off the table, the two clubs have been forced to push the derby forward, despite the disappointment it brings to fans and clubs alike.
A Recurring Challenge for Kenya’s Top Fixture
This latest setback adds to a growing list of postponements that have plagued the Mashemeji Derby in recent years.
Renovations, event bookings, and logistical challenges have repeatedly interrupted the fixture, underscoring a deeper issue of Kenya’s top clubs still lacking dedicated home grounds.
Only Nyayo and Kasarani currently meet the standards required to host the derby safely, leaving Gor Mahia and AFC Leopards without permanent venues they can rely on.
What Happens Next
Officials have assured supporters that a new match date will be announced soon, once an appropriate venue is secured.
Despite the delay, anticipation remains high for a clash that continues to define Kenyan football’s competitive spirit and cultural significance.
