Kenya’s Harambee Starlets are on the brink of making history as they prepare for their decisive return leg against Gambia in the 2025 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) qualifiers on Tuesday.
With a commanding 3-1 lead from the first leg in Nairobi, the Starlets are just 90 minutes away from sealing their ticket to Morocco and millions of shillings await if they complete the mission in Senegal.
Cash Rewards Set for Qualification Milestone
The players have every reason to push even harder, with President William Ruto promising substantial incentives for qualification.
Each player will receive Ksh1 million should the team win away and qualify for WAFCON, while a Ksh500,000 bonus awaits them if they draw and still advance.
This pledge adds to the growing motivation surrounding the team after the Headf of State already rewarded the squad Ksh10 million for their impressive first-leg performance at the Nyayo National Stadium.
Strong Footing and Rising Confidence
The Starlets head into the second leg in Banjul with a healthy two-goal cushion courtesy of goals from Mwanalima Adam, Fasila Adhiambo, and Shalyne.
Their dominant display in front of a passionate home crowd underlined their intent to return to the continental stage for the first time since 2016.
Qualification for WAFCON would mark a major comeback for the Starlets and a boost for women’s football in Kenya, following years of rebuilding and restructuring.
With millions at stake and pride on the line, the players have all to play for.
