Naivas Supermarkets, Kenya’s largest retail chain, has announced a leadership transition that signals the start of a new chapter in its three-decade story.
Andreas von Paleske, currently the company’s Chief of Strategy, will assume the role of Chief Executive Officer from 1 November. He takes over from David Kimani, a founding member who has led the retailer through some of its most ambitious years of growth.
Mr von Paleske joined Naivas eight years ago and is credited with helping craft the company’s aggressive expansion strategy. During his tenure, Naivas grew from a family-run enterprise into a dominant force with more than 100 outlets nationwide.
“Having achieved several landmark milestones in the past few years, and with a strong leadership team in place, I could not think of a better opportunity than our 35th anniversary to pass on the baton to Andreas,” Mr Kimani said in a statement on Tuesday.
Kimani’s departure marks a significant moment for the homegrown retailer, which started as a small grocery shop in Nakuru in the 1990s and is now a household name across Kenya. He will, however, remain involved in the company alongside fellow family members Peter and Charles Mukuha.

Naivas International Chairman Arnaud Lagesse described Kimani’s leadership as “truly commendable,” crediting him with building one of Kenya’s “great corporate success stories.”
“With Andreas, we have the right leader to take the business to even greater heights,” Mr Lagesse said. “His appointment ensures continuity and positions the company for its next phase of growth.”
The leadership change comes at a time when Kenya’s retail landscape is evolving rapidly, with increased competition from international entrants and shifting consumer habits. Analysts say continuity in leadership and strategy will be key for Naivas as it balances expansion with efficiency in a challenging economy.
For Naivas, the appointment blends tradition with modern management — a nod to its family roots and a bet on global experience steering it through its next growth cycle.
