Sammy Boy never thought a joke would reach this far.
The Nairobi-based forex trader and influencer has spoken out after Kenya’s viral “SIM2” craze took a personal turn, with strangers sending him unexpected romantic messages.
On Instagram, Sammy Boy posted screenshots of direct messages from men declaring affection and even asking to be “linked up” through the SIM2 trend.
One wrote simply: “Hello, how are you? … I like you. I need you please.”
Another pushed further, leaving the trader unsettled.
“I repeat, sick world,” Sammy Boy told his followers. “You all took a joke too far and now see.”
He stressed that while the meme had started as harmless fun, the advances crossed a line.
The SIM2 Craze
The phrase “SIM2” first appeared in a comedy skit by Kenyan entertainer Flaqo. In the sketch, he teased forex traders by mocking the idea of keeping a secret “backup” life—whether financial, romantic or otherwise.
The humour caught fire online. Memes followed, and soon the tag #SIM2 was trending across Kenyan social media.
But not everyone laughed. Forex traders, including Sammy Boy, argued the joke painted their profession unfairly, linking it to shady dealings.
“People don’t see the harm until it affects you directly,” he said in an earlier post.
What was meant to be light-hearted satire has now spilled into real life. Sammy Boy is not the only one caught in the chatter; fellow influencers, including Thee Pluto, have also found themselves dragged into the meme storm.
Fans remain divided. Some sympathised with the trader’s frustration, saying the trend had clearly gone too far. Others found the situation comic and continued posting under the hashtag.
