Malawi’s Chakwera Concedes Defeat, Paves Way for Mutharika’s Return

BLANTYRE, Malawi — Malawi’s president, Lazarus Chakwera, conceded defeat on Wednesday, acknowledging that his rival, Peter Mutharika, had secured what he called an “insurmountable lead” in last week’s election.

The 70-year-old leader, a former pastor who rose to power in 2020 after unseating Mutharika, addressed the nation just hours before the electoral commission was due to confirm the final tally.

“A few minutes ago, I called Professor Mutharika to wish him well,” Chakwera said in a televised speech. “In the days that remain, I want you to know that I am committed to a peaceful transfer of power.”

His concession clears the path for Mutharika, a constitutional law scholar and head of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), to reclaim the presidency five years after his surprise defeat.

The election was fought against the backdrop of a punishing economic crisis in the southern African nation. Inflation climbed to 33 percent under Chakwera’s watch, while the cost of maize — Malawi’s staple food — and fertiliser surged, deepening hardship in a country where most citizens depend on agriculture.

Critics accused Chakwera of indecision and failing to deliver on his pledges to curb corruption and create jobs. Supporters, however, praised him for his commitment to democratic values, even in loss.

“I know that many of you who supported my campaign for reelection will be disappointed,” Chakwera told Malawians, his voice steady but sombre. “But our democracy demands that we respect the will of the people.”

Mutharika, 85, has yet to speak publicly since his rival’s concession. His campaign tapped into growing frustration over the soaring cost of living and promised a return to stability and economic discipline.

For many Malawians, the coming days will test whether the country — one of Africa’s poorest — can navigate a peaceful transition at a time of deepening social and economic strain.
