NAIROBI — Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) Customs officers at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport intercepted suspected narcotics on Saturday after screening luggage belonging to a male passenger arriving from Bangkok. The suspect was flagged during routine baggage screening when two suitcases, each weighing 23 kilograms, showed irregular contents under the scanner. Upon inspection, Customs personnel discovered 41 sachets hidden inside the luggage. The contents are suspected to be narcotic substances.
A multi-agency team has launched a formal investigation to determine the exact nature of the seized material and pursue criminal charges under Kenyan law.
“The KRA remains committed to working closely with other government agencies in the fight against drug trafficking and the protection of Kenya’s borders,” the agency said in a statement issued Saturday afternoon.
Authorities have not released the passenger’s identity, pending the outcome of the ongoing investigation. The suspect is currently in custody.
The incident underscores continued efforts by Kenyan authorities to clamp down on international drug smuggling through major transit points. JKIA has previously been flagged as a high-risk entry point, prompting tighter surveillance and collaboration among border security agencies.
Officials said further updates would be issued once forensic analysis of the substances is complete.
