The announcement came after the release of information that the KCPE results would be released today. This would have marked the last KCPE results to be announced in history due to the inception of the Competence Based Curriculum (CBC).

During the release of the KCPE results, the CS explained why there would be another KCPE examination at the start of the year. He mentioned that the students who were unable to sit for the examinations this year would get a second chance.

Considering this is the last KCPE examination to be administered by Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC), there would be no possibility to register end of next year. Furthermore, the students who studied the 8-4-4 system would not be eligible to sit for the CBC exams to be held end of next year.

Reasons for Special Exams

According to the CS, over 9,000 known students did not sit for the examinations for various reasons. Among the reasons were, late registration, floods, natural disasters, or an illness that led to someone being hospitalised. In the past, people would just register to do the examinations a year later, but this would not be possible this time.

He further explained that this model would help the government attain the 100 per cent transition policy. This policy involves all students being able to transition from primary school to a high school after completion of their KCPE exams.

The date for the special examinations is however yet to be revealed. The education ministry would announce the exact 2024 special exams date with time.

“To ensure that no candidate misses out on joining Form One from the final 2023 KCPE examination cohort, the Ministry of Education will conduct thorough mapping of any of those who may have failed to sit their examination this year in order to administer a Special Exam in January 2024,”

How to Check for KCPE results

To confirm KCPE results via SMS, one ought to send the candidate’s index number to 40054. The students will be able to send the messages and receive their results once the announcement has been completed by the CS.

To send the SMS, one would need to have Ksh 25 of airtime per SMS.

Due to the high number of pupils who sat for the exams, it is likely that the system might experience delays.

To confirm results online, one needs to visit the KNEC portal, click on the KNEC tab and select the year the candidate sat for the exam (2023). After, input the candidate’s index number and submit. The results will appear shortly after.
