Eliud Owalo, the ICT CS, indicated on Wednesday that the ICT ministry will take harsher action when necessary to address gaps that allow online platforms to be exploited.
This follows a worrying trend of people sharing explicit content on TikTok Live late in the night. Concerned about the currently widespread practice of TikTok users broadcasting sexual content between the hours of 11 p.m. and 3 a.m., Owalo announced that they will evaluate the legal restrictions to safeguard social media users.

The CS referenced the Computer Misuse and Cyber Crimes Act 2019, which he claimed provides the foundation for combating the sharing of sexually explicit material online, during an interview with NTV. To prevent cybercrimes like these, he said that the government is open to looking into how the legislation and other frameworks might be improved.
Some of the offenses contained in the act include child pornography, cyber terrorism, and identity theft. Given that a sizable portion of TikTok’s user base consists of kids and teenagers, the rise of sexually explicit material there has been termed as extremely concerning.

The ICT CS has called for Kenyan users of the app to stay vigilant to prevent the exploitation of young children on the internet. He emphasized the value of individual accountability in preventing cybercrime.
