Egypt Bans Travis Scott’s Giza Pyramid Concert

Travis Scott was set to debut his fourth album, Utopia in Egypt on July 28, but as it currently stands, it is not yet certain whether he will be performing after he was banned from performing.

A local Egyptian authority responsible for granting permits, The Egyptian Syndicate of Musical Professions, announced the cancellation of Travis Scott’s concert at the Pyramid of Giza.

The Syndicate indicated in a statement that the concert conflicted with its mission of preserving traditional Egyptian and Arab culture.

They found images and documented information on the strange rituals Travis Scott practices in his concerts that conflict with their culture and heritage. They however did not specify what issues they had with the artist’s content.

On the other hand, Live Nation which is helping put on the concert is disputing the statement by the Syndicate on Travis Scott’s concert being cancelled.

There have been no changes to Travis Scott’s show in Egypt. Any report to the contrary are false. We can’t wait to celebrate Utopia with you in Egypt.

The Syndicate has previously granted permits to foreign artists but stresses that performance should not undermine their traditions and customs. Of late the Syndicate has been opposed to urban music particularly, rap.

Egypt is currently in a battle with African-American movements that claim to have affiliation with the Pharaohs, what it denounces as a reinterpretation of its history. Mashrou’Leila, a Lebanese rock band was prohibited from performing after a pride flag was displayed at a concert in Cairo.

Travis Scott has yet to release a statement regarding the situation considering how big of an impact the concert was to have on the rollout of his album, Utopia. As of now, fans are still uncertain.
