Good Storytelling
True crime shows are said to have good storytelling in that they have characters, a main character, a plot, suspense, and tension, and evoke human emotion. The characters in a true crime story are usually the victims and the perpetrator. If you have been a long-term fan of crime stories, you understand the tension in the way that true crime shows are put together, it makes for good storytelling, only that it is tragic.
Evil Fascinates
Naturally, as humans, we are fascinated by evil and it is a normal reaction to want to understand the psychology behind why people do evil things. It is normal for people to seek to understand why killers kill, what drives them to that point, and why they get away with crimes (if they do) for a period of time. It is ingrained in human psychology and nature to want to understand why things happen the way they do, especially if things are non-conventional.
24/7 News Cycle
The news may also be a fueling factor as to why people love true crime. Most of the time, news headlines are known to sell when they put a true crime story. The media knows that people are drawn to controversial crime stories and they push the stories to be ahead in coverage. In this way, the audience could adopt a knack for true crime as they seek a follow-up of the news headlines.
