Nigerian chef and current record holder for the longest cooking marathon by an individual, Hilda Effiong Bassey (Hilda Baci), has officially been recognized by Guinness World Records for breaking the previous record.

The young chef, who announced that she was going to try and break the world record just a few weeks ago by cooking for 100 hours nonstop, has broken the record by cooking for 93 hours and 11 minutes.

She took up the challenge on May 11, cooking continuously for four days up to May 15 and preparing more than 100 dishes. Although she had targeted to reach 100 hours, Guinness deducted seven hours from her total amount of hours citing that she took extra time on a break earlier on in the marathon. The deduction has caused mixed reactions among Nigerians online who say that the seven hour deduction is too much.

During the four day cook-a-thon, the Nigerian chef was expected to follow the following rules by Guinness World Records;

  • At any given time, there must be a minimum of two items being cooked.
  • A sous-chef is allowed to help with preparation, cleanup, and cleaning of the kitchen, but the person setting the record must handle all the cooking.

Nigerian celebrities and citizens came out to support the young chef during the cooking marathon and they have congragulated her on the same. Hilda had earlier said that her goal for trying to break the record was not only to appreciate the Nigerian food and culture and put it on the map, but to also inspire young girls to chase their dreams.
