A man incarcerated at Fulton County Jail’s met an untimely demise after being attacked and consumed by bedbug infestation within his jail cell after an autopsy was taken.
According to the family’s attorney, Ben Crump, Mr. Thompson suffered from over 1,000 bites, and insects were discovered in his mouth, ears, nose, and throughout his body.
The incident has sent shockwaves through both the inmate population and the prison administration, raising concerns about the living conditions and safety of detainees.
“Untreated schizophrenia, poor living conditions, and severe body insect infestation”, his family’s lawyer said.
Amid an internal investigation into the incident, three staff members at Fulton County Jail have tendered their resignations.
After an independent autopsy conducted by Dr. Roger Mitchell Jr., a former chief medical examiner in Washington, DC, disturbing details have emerged regarding the death of Mr. Lashawn Thompson in Fulton County Jail’s psychiatric wing last September.
Dr. Mitchell’s findings revealed that Mr. Thompson’s untimely demise was a result of severe neglect, exacerbated by untreated schizophrenia, deplorable living conditions, lack of proper grooming, extensive and severe body insect infestation, dehydration, and rapid weight loss.
The 35-year-old had been transferred to the Fulton County Jail’s psychiatric wing due to officials recognizing his mental illness.
Tragically, he was discovered unresponsive on September 13th, approximately three months after his initial arrest in June.
