Shujaa is now in 14th place after a difficult start to the season and is in danger of being relegated. Before arriving in Hamilton, the team finished in 13th place in Cape Town with only three points.

The series is set up so that following the penultimate event in Toulouse, the 15th-ranked team will be demoted to the 2024 Challenger Series, while the 12th to 14th-ranked teams will compete for the final spot in the 2024 World Series against the Challenger Series 2023 victor. Shujaa must start winning.

However, the Hamilton series has started off rough for Shujaa.

The national rugby sevens team has suffered defeats to France (21-26), Fiji (7-21), and Samoa (5-26)
Up next is the ninth-place quarterfinal matchup between Shujaa and Canada which will take place on Saturday, January 21, at 11:30 EAT.

This places Kenya in a tough spot since the 15th-ranked team will be relegated following the 10th round in Toulouse, France, in accordance with the new series relegation format.

The top two teams will then face off in a championship game, with the winner advancing to the 2024 Series as the 12th core team. The relegation play-off will follow a round-robin style.

In order to secure a spot in the 2024 World Rugby Sevens Challenger Series, the other three teams will compete in their respective Regional Sevens Championships.
