The tax evasion case against businesswoman Mary Wambui and her daughter Purity Njoki Mungai has been withdrawn from the court on Tuesday, January 10.
Mary Wambui, who is the Chairperson of the Communications Authority of Kenya (CAK), has been facing a Ksh 2.2 billion tax evasion with her daughter as the Director of Purma Holdings.
The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) applied to discharge them from the case over a sufficient lack of evidence. The application was granted by Magistrate Felix Kombo.
The two victims were dramatically arrested in 2022 following investigations by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) which accused them of dodging to pay taxes.
Allowing the application to withdraw the case from the court, the trial Magistrate Felix Kombo said that he was satisfied with the agreement reached by the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) and the two on the settlement of the case.

“Following successful compounding of offenses on December 6, 2022, and subsequent payment of fines imposed, the authority now wishes to withdraw the matter pending before the court,” read the letter by KRA dated December 21, 2022.

Purma Holdings Limited and its Directors Mary Wambui and Purity Njoki had been accused of knowingly and unlawfully excluding from the company’s income tax return of Ksh 2.5 billion.
The two were facing eight counts of unlawfully omitting taxes between 2014 and 2016.
