Two boys from the Western region, Lewis Otieno and Fwaro Makokha, have emerged as the best-performing candidates in the 2022 Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) examinations.
The 2022 KCPE top achievers, Makokha and Otieno scored 431 marks a piece to edge the rest of their colleagues across the country.
Fwaro from Christ the King Primary School in Bungoma county, emerged as the top student nationally, with Lewis writing his examinations from St Peter’s Mumias Boys Primary school, Kakamega county.

CS Machogu noted that the second candidate only fell short of first place by three marks garnering 428 marks, from Gilgil Academy Primary School, Nakuru county.
Unlike the previous announcements, Education CS Ezekiel Machogu did not disclose the names of the top pupils and their respective schools.
Neither did he indicate the performance per county, suggesting that ranking had been shelved.
A total of 1,233, 852 candidates sat for the examinations and of them, 9,443 scored 400 marks and above.
Another 307,756 candidates scored between 300 and 399 marks. 619,593 of the candidates scored between 200 and 299 marks.
Those who scored between 100 and 199 marks were 296,336 while 724 scored 99 marks and below.
Machogu said 252 candidates in nine examination centres engaged in malpractices but would be allowed to join secondary schools.

“The said candidates have scored zero in subjects where they engaged in examination malpractices but will get overall marks from the other subjects. They will also transition to secondary schools,” the CS said.
He further observed that the best candidate this year improved from the 428 marks posted in 2021.
“The mark of the highest candidate rose from 428 in 2021 to 431 in 2022. We are very impressed with the KCPE examination class of 2022 for performing well and raising the standards of the main performance Candidates can therefore collect their examination results from their respective examination centres. Individual candidate’s results can also be accessed by sending the candidate’s index number followed by the initials ‘KCPE’ to the SMS code 20076,” he said while officially releasing the 2021 KCPE results.
