2022 Qatar World Cup champions Argentina returned home as heroes as the winners’ parade is halted for security reasons. Lionel Messi flown by helicopter to his hometown.
Shortly before 3am on Tuesday World Cup Champions Argentina, led by captain Lionel Messi descended from the plane at the Ezeiza International Airport in Buenos Aires. The 2022 Qatar World Cup winners were received by thousands of fans.
Messi, who was carrying the World Cup trophy, and manager Lionel Scaloni were the first people to exit the aircraft. Rock band La Mosca welcomed them with the song “Muchachos,” which was written by a fan to the tune of an older song by the band and became a well-liked unofficial anthem for Argentine fans at the World Cup in Qatar.
Argentina ended their 36-year World Cup drought and the streets of Buenos Aires, according to DailyMail, was swarmed by more than 4 million people in the streets by 4pm on Tuesday.
Messi and his Argentina teammates’ parade was abruptly called off as it became evident that individuals were jumping off bridges and landing on top of buses with plenty of others on the ground, making it impossible for the buses to continue on their routes.
The bus had been moving slowly toward the Plaza de la Repblica’s Obelisk monument in the heart of Buenos Aires. Argentina’s government intervened and the World Cup champions were airlifted to complete their journey.
A video of Messi and four squad members, including Leandro Paredes and Di Maria, on a bus moving through a swarm of joyous Argentine supporters, reveals them being forced to duck beneath an overhead power cord just in time.
Following the parade, Messi was driven home by his wife Antonella Roccuzzo in a car after being flown back by helicopter to his hometown Rosario, some 185 miles from Buenos Aires.
