Ruto to absorb 11,000 youths in a tree planting program in Nairobi

President William Ruto has publicly announced the concrete plan in hiring 11,000 Nairobi County youths in greening the city by planting enough trees across the County, latest January 2023.

Speaking at the 59th Jamhuri Day celebrations at Nyayo Stadium on Monday, December 12th, President Ruto stated that the 11,000 teenagers will be absorbed from the old Kazi Mtaani program that was initiated by the former President Uhuru Kenyatta.

Ruto said that the tree planting program is an avenue towards fighting against climate change and increase the agricultural productivity of the country as far as food security is concerned.

“We are going to work with Nairobi Governor to ensure that we work together in the greening of our city and we have agreed with the Governor that beginning January we are going to hire 11,000 young people to create the army that will green our city, those that were working under the old program of Kazi Mtaani”

“Under our program on managing climate change we will ensure that we build our 15 billion tree cover to be planted around the country. We will build it from the bottom-up”, the President sated in his Jamhuri Day speech.

In achieving the 15 billion tree cover across the country, President William Ruto cited that the interior Cabinet Secretary, Kithure Kindiki has already received the orders in working with the provisional administration by involving the chiefs, assistant chiefs and nyumba kumi leaders in leading the tree planting scheme.

“The ministry of interior has instructions to start with the 45,000 people at the bottom of the provisional administration pyramid, the nyumba kumi leaders, coming to the 9,000 assistant chiefs and 4,000 chiefs to ensure that we build from the bottom going up our tree planting exercise to ensure that we reach the 15 billion trees planted across the country”, he added.

He further encouraged the other 46 Governors across the country to embrace the same movement to achieve the set up goal as course of action in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

“I want to ask other Governors in other parts of Kenya to join us in this exercise of tree planting because it is an exercise of our moment to manage the effects of climate change,” President William Ruto said.
