In an exclusive interview with the Director of a creative Communication Agency, Tandem Network. An implementation Agency for Sky, appointed to launch and manage Sky girls in kenya, and also direct Sky girls key program, Svetlana Polikarpova.

Svetlana reveals that Sky Girls aims at supporting girls and young women by educating and informing them on how to go about situations life throws their way from early teenhood, creating awareness on self-care, adolescence, relationships, life choices, and goals for young girls.

“Sky Girls is basically a teen empowerment movement, we work with teen girls between the ages of 12 and 19 and we empower them with the confidence and the refusal techniques to be able to resist negative peer pressure, whether that’s pressure to smoke or relationship pressure, for example Pressure to go through a sexual relationship, if you’re not sure.” Sletvlana noted.

“We are launching a new season of Sky Girls called Sista, that will premier this December 3, this will enables us reach our target audience since most teens will be on holidays. We make our shows relatable to our audience, the show hosts are young girls and boys”.

“Also we target schools to expound our audience, ensuring every kenyan girl gets this empowerment, so we visit schools, where girls from all walks of life meet together, so we cover everyone”

“We also visit both formal and informal settlements around Nairobi, to reach to those who perhaps cannot get to us on Tv and Social platforms, other than that we also set up workshops like this launching event, which we will carry on with every two days of the week. We encourage girls to come here with there parent’s consent so they get empowered as they also interact with each other.

“Sky Girls also has magazines that we hand out by the streets to create awareness, other than that, we also have social media handles.” Svetlana explained.

The Bill and Melinda Gates-sponsored platform seeks to empower women by reaching out to Kenyan teenage girls to offer them advice and a space to come together as a community and help each other make the right life choices at an early age.

A recently released report by the Ministry of Health shows every one in five adolescents aged between 15 and 19 is already a mother or pregnant with their first child, as new HIV infections among teenage girls in Kenya were ranked third worldwide.

“We deliver about 12,000 women every month and out of this, 10% are mothers between 10 and 19… in the last year, we have seen almost 6,000 teen pregnancies in Nairobi and 50% of them end up being HIV positive,” Dr Ouma Oluga noted in a public statement on August 22, 2022.
