Man United Win Not Enough as Arsenal Secure Top Spot in Europa League

Matchday 6 of 6 in the Europa League places Manchester United to face tough third-placed Champions League teams in the play-off round. Arsenal is safe.

Thursday Night Football is about to get a whole lot more exciting as Top Clubs eliminated from the UEFA Champions League (FC Barcelona, Juventus, Ajax, Sevilla, Sporting, Bayer Leverkusen, Salzburg, and Shakhtar Donetsk) will face Manchester United, Roma, Monaco, PSV Eindhoven, Nantes, FC Union Berlin, and Rennes, in a two-legged Europa League play-off match.

Manchester United’s 1-0 away win against Spanish outfit Real Sociedad means the ‘Red Devils’ will face familiar foes eliminated from the UEFA Champions League.

Alejandro Garnacho scored his first senior goal for Manchester United. Assisted by Cristiano Ronaldo, Garnacho (18 years old) made history by overtaking George Best as United’s youngest non-English goalscorer in a European competition.

Other key performers on the night were De Gea, Lisandro Martinez, covering for a rather shaky partner in Lindelof following Varane’s absence due to injury, and Dalot.

Arsenal Proceed To Last 16

Premier League club Arsenal won 1-0 on Thursday night against FC Zurich. The Gunners come back to winning ways in the Europa League, following just their second defeat in all competitions this season to PSV.

Kieran Tierney’s fantastic strike in the 17th minute was enough for the Gunners to secure a win. Arsenal Manager Mikel Arteta will be hoping the win gives the squad much-needed confidence against Chelsea in the Premier League, on Sunday.

According to Eurosport for the first time since 2008/09 Arsenal have kept a clean sheet in every home European group stage game.

Arsenal achieved direct qualification to the Round of 16 in the Europa League following their 1-0 win.
