The Kisumu-bound train from Nairobi had a faulty end as it derailed at Mamboleo Junction along the Kisumu-Kakamega Highway.
The train with a capacity of up to 250 passengers faced difficulty navigating all the way to the Kisumu station after an accident due to siltation occurred just a kilometer or two to the Kisumu train station.
However, no casualties were witnessed as reported by the Railways OCPD, Kisumu, and Evans Getembe who assured everyone’s safety from the railway crew to the passengers in locomotion.
“The police officers quickly responded and we were fortunate enough that there were no casualties involved,” Mr. Getembe told the Nation at the scene.
Kenya Railways has cited siltation as the cause of the train accident at the intersection point which is part of the eight-kilometer dual carriageway Kisumu Boys roundabout–Mamboleo road.
“The siltation was a result of the accumulation of waste due to poor drainage and dumping from a nearby road construction site which was washed off by the heavy rains that occurred last night and then settled at the intersection of the road and railway line,” Kenya Railways said in a statement.
Further addressing the situation at hand, Kenya Railways stated that there were no injuries to citizens nor was there damage to the coaches of the train.
The railway management revealed the undergoing plans with KeNHA to ensure the road is clear in an attempt to bring the situation under control.
The accident seems to have caused massive congestion and traffic jam witnessed in the area of the derailment by the train en route to Kisumu.
