Formula One driver, Lewis Hamilton has shared photos while in Kenya on holiday on his recent African tour, describing his stay in the ‘motherland’ as an experience of a lifetime.
The seven-time F1 champion spent quality time with the Pokot community and was all smiles in the colourful photos he shared on his Instagram handles on Tuesday, August 16.
Hamilton regarded the rare opportunity to be with the Kenyan community as a great honour and said it felt no different from spending time with his family back home.
“I spent time with the Pokot people in Kenya and just to be in their presence was one thing… To be welcomed was something different entirely and a massive honour I don’t take lightly,”
“The way I felt here is how I feel with my family back at home. We are all family, anyway. I’ll carry this experience, and all my other memories from Kenya and from this journey as a whole, in my heart forever,” Hamilton said.
After a tough year of driving, Sir Hamilton recently decided it was time for him to take a break, and trace his roots in Africa to get a fresh perspective on life and soak in the positivity.
Hamilton is an avid naturalist and lover of animals and Kenya holds one of the biggest populations of wild, and features in many Hollywood productions as a preferred default setting when Africa-related themes are at play.
While in Kenya, he visited Reteti Animal Sanctuary a Samburu community owned and run wildlife sanctuary in Northern Kenya. He commended the Sanctuary for its commitment to rescue, research and protection of animals and said their efforts at conservation served as an inspiration to all.
“Thank you to the wonderful people at the Reteti Animal Sanctuary for not only hosting us but more importantly, dedicating their time to rescue, research and conservation,
“They’re the first indigenous, community-owned and run sanctuary in Africa and the work they do for these animals should be an inspiration to us all. They take in orphaned animals who likely wouldn’t make it on their own and release them back into the wild when they’re strong enough.
Hamilton said his experience in Kenya was a reminder that humans were not above animals and that each day proved to be more beautiful than the last.
“This was a truly centering experience, one that reinforces that we all share this planet. We’re not above animals, we’re with them. More often, we’re guests in their homes. Every day in the motherland is more beautiful than the last. Much love, Kenya,” Hamilton posted.
