The Association of African Election Authorities (AAEA) has commended the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) on how they conducted the General Election.
The observers were deployed on a solidarity mission to oversee the election said the exercise was peaceful and inclusive, in a statement made on Tuesday, August 16.
“The AAEA finds the mechanism put in place for the visually impaired, Persons with Disability and lactating mothers conducive to inclusive voting in line with article 21 of the Declaration of Human Rights and article 25 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights,” said the observer report.
The body affirmed the electoral body’s conduct and preparedness as exhibiting political maturity throughout the campaign, election, and vote tallying process.
Malawi’s Dr.Chifundo Kachale, Chairperson for the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) was the Southern Africa Regional Representative of the AAEA in the Kenyan elections.
Chifundo said the August 9 Election gave Kenyans a legitimate opportunity to freely choose their leaders.
The observers were invited to Kenya after an AAEA Executive Committee in May held in Accra, in readiness to deploy a solidarity mission to oversee Kenya’s Election.
This association entails a 45-member committee that aims to oversee the delivery of free and fair elections in their fellow African nations.
“The AAEA Solidarity Mission takes this opportunity to commend the people of Kenya, the IEBC, all political actors, and civil society for the political maturity demonstrated throughout the entire electoral process. We, members of the AREA, found the organization and conduct of the polls quite satisfactory. The August 9 2022 Elections gave Kenyans a legitimate opportunity to freely choose their leaders,” the team concluded.
Earlier, the Elections Observation Group (ELOG), confirmed their projections tally was similar to that of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission presidential results announced on August 15.
ELOG chairperson Anne Ireri said the IEBC figures announced by Wafula Chebukati fell within their projected ranges and their Parallel vote tabulation (PVT) estimates were consistent with the official results.
“ELOG’s PVT estimates are consistent with IEBC’s official results for the 2022 presidential elections,” she added. “In light of our assessment of the Election Day processes and given that IEBC figures fall within the projected ranges, the PVT projections, therefore, corroborate the official results.”
The group’s projection gave William Ruto 50.7 percent to the IEBC’s 50.49 percent with a margin of error of +/-2.1 percent; for Raila Odinga, it was 48.7 percent for the IEBC’s 48.85 percent with a margin of error of +/-2.1 percent.
George Wajackoyah and David Mwaure were placed at 0.44 percent and 0.23 percent respectively, compared with the IEBC’s 0.5 percent and 0.2 percent.
