KRA Announces Leadership Change as Humphrey Wattanga Exits

KRA announces leadership change as Humphrey Wattanga exits.

The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has announced a major leadership change following the decision not to renew the contract of its Commissioner General, Humphrey Wattanga.

In a press statement released on April 8, 2026, the KRA Board confirmed that Wattanga will proceed on terminal leave effective immediately, marking the end of his tenure at the helm of the tax authority.

The Board, chaired by Ndiritu Muriithi, praised Wattanga for his dedicated service and leadership during his time in office.

During his tenure, Wattanga played a critical role in advancing KRA’s mandate, particularly through spearheading key organizational restructuring reforms aimed at improving efficiency and service delivery.

His leadership has been credited with strengthening the Authority’s operational framework and enhancing revenue collection systems.

Dr. Lilian Nyawanda Named Acting Commissioner General

To ensure continuity, the Board has appointed Lilian Nyawanda as the Acting Commissioner General.

Dr. Nyawanda, who currently serves as the Commissioner of Customs and Border Control at KRA, will hold the position on an interim basis pending the recruitment of a substantive Commissioner General through a competitive process.

Her appointment is in line with statutory and policy provisions governing leadership transitions within the Authority.

The Authority emphasized that the leadership transition will not disrupt its operations or service delivery.

The announcement comes as KRA continues to pursue reforms and strengthen its role in revenue mobilization.
