World Cup 2026: Why Iran Will Miss the Tournament

Iran

Iran has officially confirmed that it will not take part in the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup, citing the ongoing conflict with host nation the United States as the primary reason behind the decision.

The announcement was made by Iran’s sports minister Ahmad Donyamal, who stated that the country sees no viable conditions under which it could participate in the global tournament scheduled for this summer.

Conflict With Host Nation Sparks Decision

Iran’s place in the expanded tournament had been uncertain for weeks following a dramatic escalation in hostilities between Iran and the United States.

The situation intensified after the United States and Israel carried out coordinated military strikes on Iranian targets late last month, an operation that reportedly resulted in the death of Iran’s supreme leader.

The strikes triggered a sharp response from Iran, which launched retaliatory attacks on several U.S.-allied states in the Gulf region.

The escalation further deepened geopolitical tensions and raised serious concerns about Iran’s ability to safely and politically participate in a tournament hosted by the United States.

Prior to the official confirmation, the head of the Football Federation Islamic Republic of Iran, Mehdi Taj, had already warned that Iran’s participation was increasingly unlikely.

Speaking earlier in the week, Taj indicated that the federation was struggling to see how the national team could take part in the tournament amid the worsening conflict.

Those concerns grew after comments from Donald Trump, the President of the United States, who told reporters he was indifferent about Iran’s potential participation when asked about the situation.

“No Possibility” of Participation

In a televised interview, Sports Minister Donyamal delivered the clearest position yet from the Iranian government.

“Since this corrupt government assassinated our leader, we have no conditions under which we can participate in the World Cup,” he said as quoted by BBC.

“In view of the malicious measures taken against Iran, two wars were forced upon us within eight or nine months, and several thousand of our people were killed. Therefore, we definitely have no possibility of participating in this way.”

Major Blow to Tournament Line-Up

Iran’s withdrawal represents a significant geopolitical development for the 2026 World Cup, which will be jointly hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

The decision also leaves uncertainty over how tournament organizers and world football governing body FIFA will handle the vacancy should Iran formally withdraw from the competition.

With the tournament drawing closer, FIFA may now be forced to consider replacement teams or adjustments to the qualification structure depending on how the geopolitical situation unfolds.
