US President Donald Trump has signaled that the United States could deploy naval escorts for oil tankers moving through the Gulf, as tensions with Iran continue to rise.
In a strongly worded statement, Trump announced that he has directed the United States Development Finance Corporation (DFC) to immediately provide political risk insurance and financial guarantees for all maritime trade passing through the Gulf region, particularly energy shipments.
According to the President, the insurance coverage will be offered “at a very reasonable price” and made available to all global shipping lines operating in the strategic waters.
Possible US Navy Escort Through Strait of Hormuz
Trump further warned that if necessary, the United States Navy would begin escorting oil tankers through the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most critical energy transit routes.
The Strait of Hormuz handles a significant portion of global oil shipments, linking Gulf oil producers to international markets.
Any disruption in the narrow waterway can trigger sharp spikes in global oil prices and heightened geopolitical tensions.
“If necessary, the United States Navy will begin escorting tankers through the Strait of Hormuz, as soon as possible,” Trump stated, emphasizing that the United States would ensure the “free flow of energy to the world.”
The announcement underscores Washington’s intent to safeguard global energy supply chains amid escalating friction with Iran which has raised concerns over potential threats to commercial vessels.
Trump stressed America’s readiness to act decisively, declaring that the United States’ economic and military power remains unmatched and hinting at further measures if required.
Energy markets and international shipping stakeholders are expected to closely monitor developments, as any US naval deployment in the Gulf would significantly impact regional security dynamics and global oil trade flows.
