The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has officially commissioned body-worn cameras for customs and border control officers at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) in a move aimed at enhancing transparency and efficiency in border operations.
The launch marks a significant step in the authority’s ongoing efforts to integrate modern technology into its operations while strengthening oversight in customs processes.
Speaking during the commissioning ceremony at JKIA, KRA Commissioner General Humphrey Wattanga said the introduction of the body-worn camera system reflects the authority’s commitment to accountability and improved service delivery.
Wattanga noted that the cameras will help ensure professionalism among officers while also protecting both staff and members of the public during customs interactions.
“We recognize the public’s expectation for transparency, professionalism, and accountability in government services. At KRA, we see this as an opportunity to build trust and improve how we serve citizens and businesses,” said Wattanga.
He added that the deployment of the body-worn cameras is supported by broader institutional reforms and technological upgrades aimed at strengthening oversight within customs operations.
KRA Aims to Strengthen Border Management Through Technology
The authority believes the cameras will improve operational integrity while providing reliable documentation of customs processes.
Officials say the initiative will also help address complaints related to misconduct, improve evidence collection during enforcement actions, and increase public confidence in the authority’s operations.
The introduction of body-worn cameras places KRA among institutions adopting technology-driven solutions to improve accountability in public service delivery.
As Kenya continues to modernize its customs and border management systems, KRA says such technological investments will play a critical role in promoting transparency while facilitating smoother trade and travel through the country’s busiest international gateway.
