Kenya has officially settled the long-awaited hosting fee for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, ending weeks of uncertainty over the country’s preparedness to stage the continental showpiece.
The Ministry of Sports and Youth Affairs confirmed that USD 30 million, equivalent to approximately KSh 3.9 billion, has been remitted to the Confederation of African Football (CAF).
The announcement, made on Tuesday, marks a major milestone in Kenya’s journey towards co-hosting the prestigious tournament under the Pamoja bid alongside regional partners Uganda and Tanzania.
Government Reaffirms Commitment to AFCON 2027
In a statement, Sports Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya confirmed that the government had fulfilled all required financial and institutional obligations.
“I am pleased to announce that the Government of Kenya has fully met its financial and institutional obligations to the Confederation of African Football (CAF) as we steadily advance towards co-hosting the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON),” Mvurya stated.
He added: “In fulfilment of our commitments, the Government has remitted the requisite USD 30 million hosting fee to CAF, reaffirming Kenya’s credibility, readiness, and unwavering commitment to delivering a successful continental tournament.”
Pamoja Bid Gains Momentum
Kenya is part of the historic Pamoja bid, which will see the 2027 tournament jointly hosted by East African nations, including Uganda and Tanzania.
The joint hosting arrangement is expected to boost regional integration while showcasing East Africa’s capability to stage a world-class football event.
Mvurya expressed optimism about the preparations, emphasizing that the three nations are working in unity to deliver a memorable tournament.
“As the Pamoja AFCON co-hosting countries, we remain fully committed to delivering a world-class AFCON 2027 that will not only meet but exceed continental and global expectations,” he said.
The payment of the hosting fee is seen as a significant step in strengthening Kenya’s credibility on the international sporting stage.
