Ukraine’s Defence Intelligence has claimed it identified the body of a 28-year-old Kenyan national, Clinton Nyapara Mogesa, at one of the positions previously held by Russian occupation forces in eastern Ukraine.
In a statement released by Ukrainian military intelligence, Mogesa, born a Kenyan national in 1997, was found dead in the Donetsk region, where he was allegedly deployed as part of a Russian assault unit.
From Qatar Employment to the Donetsk Frontline
According to Ukrainian authorities, Mogesa had been living and working in Qatar before leaving his job and later signing a contract with the armed forces of the Russian Federation.
After what was described as a brief period of training, he was deployed to the frontline in eastern Ukraine.
Ukrainian intelligence claims he was killed during what it termed a “meat assault”, a tactic involving high-risk, frontal attacks with little regard for casualties.
Ukraine’s Defence Intelligence alleged that Russian forces did not evacuate Mogesa’s body after his death.
The statement further claimed that his family has received neither compensation nor an official explanation from Russian authorities regarding his fate.
Passports of Other Kenyans Found
In a development likely to raise concern in Kenya, Ukrainian officials said Mogesa was found carrying passports belonging to two other Kenyan citizens.
Ukrainian intelligence suggested the documents may belong to individuals recruited under similar circumstances and potentially destined for future deployment in assault operations.
In its statement, the agency added that Mogesa could have continued living and working safely in prosperous Qatar, but instead lost his life after allegedly being drawn into the conflict in eastern Ukraine.
