Sifuna Dismisses ODM Support for Ruto in 2027

Sifuna

Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) Secretary General Edwin Sifuna has firmly stated that the party has not made any decision to support President William Ruto’s re-election in the 2027 General Election.

Speaking in a recent interview, Sifuna distanced both himself and the party from any endorsement of the Head of State, insisting that ODM remains non-committal despite its current working relationship with the government under the broad-based coalition.

“Mimi ni wa one term, proudly so,” Sifuna said, declaring that he personally believes President Ruto should serve only one term.

He added, “The party has not made any decision to support William Ruto in 2027. That is why the Central Committee resolved to engage with different political formations. That is the official position of the party.”

Sifuna emphasized that ODM is deliberately keeping its options open ahead of the next election cycle.

‘No One Can Compel Me to Vote for Ruto’

The ODM Secretary General went further to assert his personal stance, making it clear that he would not back President Ruto under any circumstances.

“I still would not support him. Nobody can compel me to vote for William Ruto. I simply do not see a path to power for William Ruto,” Sifuna said.

His remarks underline growing ideological differences within ODM, particularly on the party’s cooperation with the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA).

ODM has remained internally divided since the death of its long-serving party leader Raila Odinga in October last year.

A faction aligned with the government has openly supported President Ruto under the broad-based coalition arrangement, arguing that cooperation ensures political stability and development.

However, leaders such as Sifuna have consistently opposed the working relationship, warning that it risks eroding ODM’s identity as an opposition party and alienating its support base.

Uncertain Political Path Ahead

Sifuna’s remarks reaffirm that ODM’s future political direction remains unresolved, with no official commitment to President Ruto’s 2027 bid.

The party’s Central Committee is expected to continue consultations with various political formations as internal debates intensify.

As the 2027 elections draw closer, ODM’s internal power struggles and strategic choices are likely to shape Kenya’s political landscape.
