Former President Uhuru Kenyatta joined Catholic worshippers at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Mombasa on Wednesday to mark Ash Wednesday and the start of Lent. The service, steeped in tradition, opened the 40-day period of prayer, fasting, and reflection leading up to Easter.
Kenyatta, standing alongside congregants, emphasised the themes of repentance, spiritual renewal, and compassion.
“I wish all Christians a blessed Lenten season filled with prayer, reflection, and acts of kindness,” he said.
In a gesture highlighting Kenya’s commitment to interfaith harmony, the former President also extended warm wishes to Muslims observing Ramadan.

“May this sacred period strengthen faith, deepen compassion, and foster unity among communities,” Kenyatta said, reflecting on the shared values of discipline, charity, and devotion that both Lent and Ramadan uphold.
His presence at the church and message to Muslim communities underscored a long-standing tradition of religious coexistence in Kenya, as leaders seek to model respect and solidarity across faiths.
