Six people were killed and seven others injured following a grisly road accident involving a matatu and a Passenger Service Vehicle (PSV) bus along the Nairobi–Mombasa highway on Friday night.
The crash occurred shortly after midnight at the Katumani area near Konza Technopolis City, along the border of Machakos and Makueni counties.
Mukaa Sub-county Police Commander Hussein Abduba said the matatu, belonging to NAEKANA Sacco, was travelling from Nairobi when its driver attempted to overtake several vehicles on the busy highway.
During the manoeuvre, the matatu collided head-on with a Tahmeed Coach bus that was travelling in the opposite direction from Mombasa to Nairobi.
“The matatu driver tried to overtake a lorry when the bus suddenly appeared, leading to a head-on collision,” Abduba said.
Six people died on the spot, while seven others sustained injuries and were rushed to Machakos Level 5 Hospital for treatment. The bodies of the deceased were taken to the same hospital’s mortuary, where they await identification and post-mortem examinations.
Police have urged motorists to exercise caution, especially on major highways such as the Nairobi–Mombasa road, noting a spike in accidents during the December 2025 festive season.
“Drivers must be careful on the road. We have a responsibility to protect lives,” Abduba said.
The accident comes amid renewed efforts by the government to curb road carnage, including the rollout of mobile traffic courts aimed at enforcing traffic laws, improving accountability, and reducing fatalities on Kenyan roads.
