Ruto, US Deputy Secretary Christopher Landau Reaffirm Kenya–US Ties

Ruto-Landau

President William Ruto on Wednesday met United States Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau at State House, Nairobi, during the American official’s two-day visit to Kenya, reaffirming the strength of bilateral relations between the two nations.

The leaders discussed a wide range of bilateral and regional issues, underscoring their shared commitment to deepening cooperation and long-standing diplomatic ties.

KSh208 Billion Health Deal Highlighted as Landmark Partnership

President Ruto pointed to the KSh208 billion Kenya–US Health Cooperation Framework signed in 2024 as a signature example of the strong relationship between Nairobi and Washington.

The agreement, the first of its kind globally under the America First Global Health Strategy, is a government-to-government deal designed to strengthen Kenya’s universal healthcare programme by bypassing traditional NGO intermediaries and accelerating service delivery.

Balanced Trade and AGOA Renewal Boost Economic Ties

The two leaders welcomed the continued growth of bilateral trade, describing it as mutually beneficial and well-balanced.

President Ruto welcomed the renewal of the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA) for an additional three years after its expiration in 2025, noting its role in enabling thousands of African products to access the US market duty-free and quota-free

At the bilateral level, Kenya and the US are making significant progress toward a comprehensive trade agreement.

Discussions are focused on key areas including tariff reductions, digital trade, and investment facilitation, aimed at expanding market access and strengthening economic integration.

President Ruto reaffirmed Kenya’s commitment to strengthening its already excellent relationship with the United States, describing the partnership as a critical pillar for economic growth, regional stability and global cooperation.
