Nairobi, 1 January 2026 – The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) has reaffirmed its commitment to party unity and reorganization, as the party prepares for a crucial pre-2027 political year. Party leader Oburu Oginga delivered a New Year message urging members to remain steadfast and focused following the death of ODM founder Raila Odinga.
In his address, Oginga reflected on 2025 as a year of “ups and downs,” noting both development achievements and the loss of several prominent figures, including Raila Odinga and political veteran Ojwang’. “We generally made progress, particularly within our party, ODM,” he said.

Oginga described ODM’s current status in the government as part of a “broad-based arrangement” with the Kenya Kwanza administration, led by President William Ruto, but stressed that this does not constitute a formal coalition. “We are working steadfastly to strengthen our party and urge members to remain united and focused on the people’s interests, as articulated in our 10-point agenda,” he said.
Turning to the 2027 general election, Oginga stated that ODM will make key strategic decisions by the end of 2026. “Before the end of the year, our party shall know whether we go it alone or enter a coalition. If we go it alone, I am the presidential candidate according to the party constitution,” he emphasized, signaling a firm stance against internal presidential contestation.
Oginga also dismissed suggestions that ODM could be “sold” or merged into other parties. “ODM is strong, it is kicking, and it will never be sold. This party goes down to the grassroots and is too big to be bought by anybody,” he said.
The party leader highlighted 2026 as a critical year for planning and strategic decisions leading up to the 2027 elections. “This is the year where we have to work very hard as a party and make sure that we make the decisions necessary to keep our party up and about,” he said.
Oginga concluded by wishing all Kenyans a “very happy and prosperous New Year,” stressing that ODM’s focus remains on unity, development, and advancing the interests of the people.
