Nine people, including two minors, lost their lives in a tragic road accident near Naivasha on Sunday, after a passenger bus collided head-on with a matatu. Several others were rushed to nearby hospitals with serious injuries.

According to police, the accident occurred along the busy Naivasha–Nakuru route, a stretch notorious for high-speed collisions. Eyewitnesses reported that the bus, reportedly carrying passengers from Nairobi, veered into the opposite lane and struck the matatu.

Rescue teams arrived swiftly, but many victims had already succumbed to their injuries. Authorities confirmed that the deceased included both adults and children.

Police and traffic officers have launched investigations to determine the exact cause of the crash. Early reports suggest excessive speed and reckless driving may have contributed, though mechanical failure is also being considered.

The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has urged road users to exercise caution, especially on highways prone to accidents, highlighting the need for strict adherence to traffic rules.

Local residents expressed shock at the tragedy, noting that accidents on this route have become alarmingly frequent. Community leaders called for improved road safety measures, including speed controls and regular vehicle inspections.

The accident is the latest in a series of deadly road crashes across the Rift Valley, raising questions about enforcement of traffic laws and driver behaviour in Kenya.
