Kenyans on Wedneday, January 7, came together to commemorate what would have been the 81st birthday of the late veteran statesman Raila Amolo Odinga, reflecting on a life of unwavering devotion to the nation.
Across the country and online, messages of remembrance poured in, celebrating a leader widely regarded as one of the most influential figures in Kenya’s political history.
Ruto’s Raila Remembrance
President William Ruto led the tributes with a reflective message, describing Raila as a patriot whose life lessons remain central to Kenya’s future.
“Today, January 7, we mark what would have been the 81st birthday of the Right Honourable Raila Odinga, a patriot whose life was defined by courage, sacrifice, and an unyielding love for Kenya,” Ruto said.
The President noted that Raila consistently taught Kenyans that the nation must always come before personal ambition, emphasizing unity and peace above all else.
“He believed deeply in Kenya and never lost faith that our best days lie ahead. Whether in struggle or reconciliation, he chose stability over chaos, unity over division, and hope over despair,” Ruto added.
Ruto urged Kenyans to honor Raila’s memory by embracing the values he championed.
Oburu’s Heartfelt Tribute
In one of the most personal tributes, Raila’s younger brother, Oburu Odinga, spoke of the profound bond they shared from childhood.
“My dear brother Raila, it has been incredibly difficult coming to terms with your loss,” Oburu wrote.
“We grew up as twins, sharing so much of life, laughter, and understanding.”
Oburu described Raila not only as a towering national figure but as a confidant and closest friend.
“You were more than a sibling; you were my best friend. I miss you dearly, yet in my heart, you remain alive. Happy 80 + 1 heavenly birthday,” he said.
Kalonzo Honours Baba
Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka also paid tribute, succinctly capturing the national mood.
“We remember. We appreciate. We honour BABA,” Kalonzo stated, using Raila’s popular moniker that symbolized his stature as a father figure in Kenyan politics.
