The Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) has announced the tragic death of three recruits who succumbed to medical complications during a scheduled training exercise at the Defence Forces Recruits Training School (DFRTS) in Eldoret, Uasin Gishu County.
In a press release issued on Friday, KDF said the incident occurred on 29 January 2026 during a routine endurance exercise conducted as part of the recruits’ standard training programme.
According to the military, the affected recruits developed medical complications while participating in the exercise.
On-site medical personnel responded immediately, administering first aid before evacuating the recruits to Eldoret Regional Hospital for specialised treatment.
“Despite concerted efforts by the attending medical teams, the recruits were regrettably pronounced dead,” the statement read.
Families Notified, Support Offered
KDF confirmed that the next of kin have been formally notified of the tragic loss. The military said it is providing the necessary support and assistance to the affected families during this difficult period.
The defence forces conveyed heartfelt condolences to the families, loved ones, fellow recruits and colleagues of the deceased.
Investigation Launched
A thorough investigation has been initiated in line with established military procedures to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident.
KDF noted that the findings will guide any additional measures aimed at enhancing the safety and welfare of personnel undergoing training.
“The Kenya Defence Forces remains committed to upholding the highest standards of safety, professionalism and care for all its personnel,” the statement added.
