Four people are feared dead following a drowning incident involving fishermen at Lake Naivasha in Nakuru County, according to the Kenya Red Cross.
In a statement issued on social media, the Kenya Red Cross said its teams are responding to the incident after a boat carrying fishermen capsized on the lake. One body has been recovered, while search and rescue and recovery operations for the remaining victims are ongoing.
The incident occurred amid reports of challenging lake conditions, which have previously been associated with similar accidents on Lake Naivasha. Emergency response teams were deployed shortly after the incident was reported.
The Kenya Red Cross confirmed that it is working with other responders at the scene to support ongoing operations. No further details were immediately provided regarding the identities of the victims or the exact circumstances leading to the capsizing.
Lake Naivasha has recorded multiple drowning incidents in recent years, particularly involving fishermen. Past incidents have often involved unregistered boats and unsafe fishing practices, with strong winds and waves contributing to accidents.
In a previous case reported in the Malewa area, five fishermen were involved in a similar incident after their boat capsized during fishing activities. Two were rescued, while others drowned. Fisheries officials later confirmed that the boat involved was unregistered and that strong winds were a contributing factor.
Authorities have continued to document an increase in drowning incidents linked to illegal fishing activities on the lake. Many fishermen have been reported to use unsafe or makeshift vessels, particularly along the shoreline.
Search and recovery efforts in the current incident are continuing as teams work to locate the missing individuals. The Kenya Red Cross has not yet issued an update on the duration or outcome of the operation.
The incident adds to a growing record of water-related fatalities on Lake Naivasha and highlights the ongoing emergency response role played by humanitarian agencies in such situations.
