Manchester United have warned supporters to ignore posts made on Bruno Fernandes’ X account after the club confirmed the profile had been hacked on Sunday night.
The United captain, who has 4.5 million followers on the platform formerly known as Twitter, is not an active user. His last legitimate post before the incident was in October, marking his 300th appearance for the club.
Shortly after 11pm GMT, Fernandes’ account began posting a rapid series of messages, initially promoting cryptocurrency content. One now-deleted post claimed a new digital currency launch, followed by another stating: “This is why I need to get paid more.”
As the activity continued, the hackers shifted focus to Manchester United’s on-field struggles, which came just hours after the club’s FA Cup exit to Brighton. One post read: “Man Utd are in the dumps [at the moment],” while another added: “Let’s get rid of INEOS.”
Further posts tagged adult content creator Bonnie Blue, before expanding to unrelated figures including the England cricket team, YouTuber KSI, and reigning world darts champion Luke Littler.
All unauthorised posts were later removed, with the club advising fans not to interact with or share any content published during the breach as efforts continue to secure the account.
