‘My Dear Bill’: Rachel Ruto’s Warm Birthday Note to President Ruto

birth

As President William Ruto marked his 59th birthday today, Sunday, the most intimate tribute came not from the podium or Parliament, but from home.

Rachel Ruto, Kenya’s First Lady, shared a warm public message that blended faith, partnership and the private cost of public life. It was a rare moment of personal reflection in a presidency more often defined by policy battles and political pressure.

“My dear Bill, happy birthday!” she wrote, before turning to the journey they have shared. “Today, I thank God for the gift of your life, for the journey we have walked together, for your courage in moments of uncertainty, and for the steady love and discipline with which you carry the weight of leadership.”

Her words offered a softer view of a man better known to Kenyans as a tireless campaigner and head of state. She spoke of sacrifice, much of it unseen. “I have seen your heart for Kenya, your tireless commitment to serve, and the quiet sacrifices that often go unseen,” she noted.

The message also carried a prayer. Rachel Ruto asked for her husband’s health, peace of mind and renewed strength as he begins another year in office. “May He surround you with wisdom, protect your steps, and reward your labour with hope for our nation and joy in our family,” she wrote.

She closed by placing his leadership within the context of family. “With all my love and gratitude, I celebrate you, not only as a leader, a father and a husband, but as the man God has entrusted to us.”

President Ruto was born on December 21, 1966, in Sambut village, Kamagut in Uasin Gishu County, to Daniel and Sarah Cheruiyot. He and Rachel married on the same date in 1991, a detail often noted as symbolic. Together, they have seven children.

Beyond the family, political allies also marked the day. Government Spokesperson Isaac Mwaura offered a faith-based message, praying for guidance and protection as the President leads the country through economic and social strain.

“May our dear Lord continue to guide and protect you as you serve and lead this great country,” he said.

National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula praised what he described as the President’s renewed vision, saying it continues to inspire Kenyans. Others echoed similar sentiments, wishing him strength and wisdom in the year ahead.
