DCI Retraces Cyrus Jirongo’s Final Hours as Detectives Raid Nairobi Hotel

Cyrus Jirongo

Since former Lugari MP Cyrus Jirongo died in a late-night road crash, investigators have been working to map his final movements.

Over the weekend, officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) raided a popular bar and restaurant along Magadi Road in Nairobi. They believe Jirongo visited the place just hours before the crash that killed him kilometres away.

Investigators questioned staff at the venue on Saturday, December 20, seeking to establish who Jirongo met, how long he stayed and what he did before leaving. The hotel’s management declined to comment.

According to investigators, forensic analysis and tips led them to the spot.

“We are reconstructing his movements before the accident,” one officer said, speaking on condition of anonymity because the matter is still under investigation.

Police believe Jirongo left a restaurant in Karen earlier that night, drove through Lang’ata Road and later joined Magadi Road, where he stopped briefly at the hotel before driving off. No arrests have been made so far, though more than ten people have already been questioned.

Jirongo died on December 13, 2025, after his vehicle was involved in a crash at Karai, along the Nairobi–Nakuru highway. His death has sparked intense public debate and growing pressure from sections of his family, who have demanded a thorough and transparent investigation.

An autopsy has shed light on the severity of the injuries. Pathologists concluded that Jirongo died from multiple blunt force injuries affecting the chest, abdomen and spine.

“There was extensive trauma,” said Dr Joseph Ndung’u, the family’s pathologist, who conducted the postmortem alongside Chief Government Pathologist Dr. Johansen Oduor at Lee Funeral Home.

He detailed crushed chest injuries, fractured ribs, damage to major blood vessels connected to the heart, abdominal injuries and a severed spinal cord. Police officers were present during the examination.

Separately, the DCI has released a detailed account of the crash itself. Investigators say the accident occurred at about 2.19am and involved Jirongo’s vehicle and a public service bus operated by Climax Company Limited.

CCTV footage recovered from a nearby petrol station shows Jirongo’s car entering the station shortly before the crash, though he did not refuel. Seconds later, he exited, made a turn back towards Nairobi, and was then hit by the bus in what police describe as a head-on collision.

The impact pushed Jirongo’s vehicle about 25 metres from the point of collision. The bus came to rest roughly 50 metres away.

The bus driver, Tyrus Kamau Githinji, has been questioned and released on cash bail as investigations continue into a possible charge of causing death by dangerous driving. He is expected to report back to the Naivasha Traffic Base on December 22.

Detectives have also recorded statements from petrol station staff and are reviewing additional CCTV footage. More witnesses, including passengers on the bus and people who interacted with Jirongo earlier that night at a Karen restaurant, are expected to be questioned.
